The Fishing Industry in Lewis and Scotland

Angus wrote extensively about fishing and the fishing industry. Unsurprisingly, most of what he wrote concerns the herring industry, once such an important component of the Scottish economy and a key source of income for crofting townships over many decades. Relative to many other subjects to which he turned his attention, his body of writing focuses rather less on the situation within Lewis and more on the broader Scottish and international context. Nonetheless, he analyses the rise and fall of the herring fishery on Lewis in great detail. Nearly all his writings on fishing are presented in this section, but some specific information about fishing boats in the Calbost area can be found elsewhere, as can stories of the adventures and accidents that befell local fishermen.
