History of Pairc

This section brings together material written by Angus about the history of that part of Lewis known as Pairc, Park or South Lochs (Pàirc or Taobh Deas nan Loch in Gaelic). However, writings that focus specifically on Angus’s native village, Calbost, are presented in other sections, as are most of his writings about named individuals as they feature in the history and folklore of Pairc.

As with the section on Lewis history, the main themes relate to land ownership and the land struggles of the 19th and early 20th centuries, and once again Angus’s political convictions are plain to see. There are detailed analyses of the Loch Shell clearances of the early 1840s, and of the Pairc Deer Raid (1887) and its aftermath.

Angus took pains to place his accounts in context, and therefore there is a fair amount of overlap with the content of the previous section.
